Biography

I am 38 years old and I live in San Mateo, CA. I am married and have a cat. I grew up in Northern Arizona but much of my family lives in Northern California going back several generations. I am an artist and make oil paintings and black and white film photographs.

My photography leans toward pictorialism, which is an approach that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, tonality, and composition. By using antique and other film cameras I can quiet the noise of the world a bit to get the look I am after. I hand-print all of my black and white photographs in a darkroom. I also make photograms. That is an image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto a light-sensitive material and then exposing it to light. Each photogram I make is unique and not one of many (there is no negative to print more from).

My paintings are mainly inspired by peaceful moments found in nature. I spend much time composing and finding a subject that I feel is worthy of the resources that go into a painting. Once I accomplish that, the painting develops pretty easily (I don't paint anything too complicated).

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Design and I used to design lighting in professional theatres for about 10 years. I have an AS degree in Interior Design from Cañada College and have taken many art courses and continue to.
